Back to Basics – Can People Change?

What does it take to change a person?

by Mike White - December 6, 2019

A scorpion and a frog meet on the bank of a stream and the scorpion asks the frog to carry him across on its back. The frog, who doesn’t trust the scorpion asks, “How do I know you won’t sting me?” The scorpion says, “Because if I do, I will die too.”

The frog is convinced, and they set out, but midstream, the frog feels the hot sting on his side. Feeling the onset paralysis he starts to sink, knowing they both will drown, but has just enough time to gasp “Why?”

The Scorpion replies “I can’t help it. Its my nature…”

Whether or not you’ve heard that old fable before, the message is very clear. In general, people don’t change.

A recent study out of UC Riverside found that the traits of first graders are accurate predictors of what they will be like as adults. Another study also found that 7 out of 10 inmates return to crime within a few years of being released from prison.

You all know people who just seem so stuck in their way- and you think they’re never gonna change! And perhaps you have a habit and you feel so stuck in it that you’ve just given up. It just seems impossible! Maybe you even justify it. You say things like, “I can’t help it. This is the way I was raised. The temptation is just so strong that I can’t resist.”

Can people – can you – really change?

In today’s video, Pastor Mike talks about what it takes to change.
