10 Years of Home Page Memories: Trout Stocking at Pine Creek

by Amiee Jones & Ethan Chabala - April 15th, 2024

2024 will mark the 10 year anniversary of the Home Page Network. The studio began broadcasting in January of 2014 and has been blessed to serve the community for the past decade. This is one of Ethan’s favorite memories!

Original Aired March 23rd, 2018

Trout fishing is a popular and beloved passed time in Tioga County! Ever wonder where those colorful swimmers came from? Some of your catches come from our local waters, but some may have been put there!

Waterways Conservation Officer, Chad Lauer, helps facilitate trout stocking in our very own Pine Creek. Officer Lauer shared about the origins of this idea: “…it was a congruent effort between the PA Fish and Boat Commission and the local fishing community to tackle and solve a social issue that many members of the community believed was present. Which was a lack of interest in fishing this particular section of Pine Creek. So to solve the issue, the Commission considered the opinions of those purchasing fishing license, and decided to create an exciting fishing opportunity not only for the local fishing community, but also the nomadic one. Who doesn’t like fishing for HUGE TROUT? So, knowing the answer to that question, the Commission brought larger trout to the county in hopes that more people would be interested in fishing this section of Pine Creek.”

Initially, there was about 1500 lbs of trout stocked in Pine Creek, with numerous local organizations coming together to support the effort. Chad explained the break down of the poundage. “…about 25% of that weight being trophy sized trout ranging from 15 inches to 25 inches in length. The fish came from the Bellefonte State Fish Hatchery, and ranged in age from 1.5 years to 4 years old trout.” What a great fishing opportunity, right here in our own backyard!

Future stockings are being scheduled, and are open to community involvement. Chad shared quite candidly that it’s more fun when others get involved! (Homepage Correspondent, Lauren Gooch, joined Officer Lauer in the stocking process in today’s feature!)
