Destroyers Press Conference Highlights

Four big announcements made and uniforms revealed

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - April 10, 2019

At a press conference on Tuesday, April 9 at the Arnot Mall in Horseheads, NY, Mansfield Destroyers’ owner Don Lewis made four announcement reveals in advance of the upcoming season.

DESTROYERS REVEAL JERSEYS

“We are very excited about our inaugural season jerseys. Coach Hill, The Lewis Family, Larry Gill and I put a lot of work into designing our jerseys, and we feel that these jerseys will proudly represent Mansfield and the surrounding boroughs.”

DESTROYERS REVEAL MASCOT “SLUGGER” TO THE TEAM

“This is an exciting day for the Mansfield Destroyers as we introduce Slugger to our family. Slugger will be out and about as much as possible. You will be able to find him at sponsor businesses, parades, community events and of course all Destroyers home games. If you would like Slugger to be part of your event, please send us an e-mail to discuss more in detail.”

DESTROYERS REVEAL INAUGURAL SEASON PROMOTIONAL SCHEDULE

“I’ve promised since day one that the Destroyers will be highly involved in the community and fan friendly. I think our promotion schedule proves just that. We will be giving away T-shirts, trading cards, team photos and honoring our First Responders, Pet Shelters and other organizations during our inaugural season. We look forward to an affordable action-packed summer with a fun family atmosphere.”

TEAM SLOGAN, “MANSFIELD DESTROYERS, WE ARE FAMILY”

“I think our slogan this year explains exactly how we want our fans to feel. The front office staff, the coaches and players, are a summer family, but we want the local community and surrounding areas to be a part of the Destroyers family also. This is our fan’s team, and we look forward to our family being part of your family during our inaugural season and many more seasons to come.”

In addition to these four reveals, Lewis also announced a Junior Destroyers baseball camp, the signing of two Division I players to this year’s roster, and the team up with “The Sausage Maker” to support the Special Olympics of PA.

DESTROYERS ANNOUNCE JUNIOR DESTROYERS BASEBALL CAMP

Experience two days or back-to-back weekends of high-quality instruction from Mansfield’s own collegiate summer team, the Mansfield Destroyers. Some of the players assisting with the camp come from Division I colleges such as Kentucky, Xavier, Villanova, UC Davis to name a few. The first annual Jr. Destroyers Baseball Camp includes instruction each day in all aspects of the game, including hitting mechanics, infield & outfield drills, pitching, and catching.

This camp is an opportunity for kids ages 5-18 to take their game to the next level. The cost of the two-day camp is $80 and open to both boys and girls.

Schedule:

June 29-30: 9am-Noon (ages 11-18), Noon-3pm (ages 5-10)
July 6-7: 9am-Noon (ages 11-18), Noon-3pm (ages 5-10)

Forms can be found and printed off the Destroyers website.

The camp will be run by Zac Bellinger who played Division I baseball for Virginia Commonwealth University and Division II baseball for The College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY. Zac played three seasons in the PGCBL for the Elmira Pioneers and one season in the CPL for the Florence RedWolves. Zac helped lead Thomas A. Edison to four consecutive Section IV Class “C” championships and honored as the New York Class “C” Player of the Year as a senior.

DESTROYERS ANNOUNCE THE SIGNING OF DIVISION I PLAYERS FROM WAKE FOREST AND THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH

Michael Wein – from Milton, GA, is a 6’1, 190-pound freshman from Wake Forest University. Michael is a switch-hitting infielder who batted .500 as a senior with ten doubles, eight triples, six home runs and an impressive 40 RBIs. Michael participated in the 2016 Perfect Game Underclass All-American Games in San Diego.

“We are thrilled to have Michael a power hitting switch hitter with good speed. He is projected to be in the middle of our line up and see a lot of time on the left side of the infield,” stated Coach Hill.

JC Mendez – from Miami, FL, is a 5’11, 185-pound freshman from the University of Pittsburgh. JC is a two-way player, who plays outfield and pitches. JC played at Christopher Columbus High School where his team was a two-time Regional Champion and helped them get to the State Championship.

“JC will play a key role on our pitching staff and will also see time in the outfield,” declared Coach Hill.

DESTROYERS TEAM UP WITH THE SAUSAGE MAKER TO SUPPORT THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS OF PA

“Let me win, but if I cannot win let me be brave in the attempt.”
