Destroyers Hang On For Win over Rochester

by Ed Weaver - June 18, 2021

The Mansfield Destroyers thwarted a late rally by the Rochester Ridgemen to score a 6-5 victory on Thursday, June 17.

It was a scoreless game until the bottom of the 4th when the Destroyers’ Blake Murray doubled to score Bryce Porter and John Whooley to give Mansfield a 2-0 lead. Mansfield added two more runs to the lead later in the 6th as Porter again crossed home plate on a Murray sac fly to make it 3-0, then Whooley scored again on an RBI single to left field by Chay Yeager to make it 4-0.

Rochester cut the Destroyers’ lead in half with 2 runs in the 7th but Mansfield pushed the lead back to a four-run game in the bottom half of the inning. Michael Cervantes scored on a wild pitch while Willie Schwarick was at the plate then it was Porter’s turn to drive in a run as he singled to left field scoring Theron Schilling.

Rochester cut the lead to 6-3 with a run in the 8th and then made it a one-run game in the top of the 9th. A solo home run by Tyler Estabrook and an error that scored Brandon Moore made it 6-5, but the Destroyers were able to work themselves out of the inning to secure the win.

Mansfield had 9 hits on the evening, led by Whooley (3-for-3 with a walk). Yeager was 2-for-4 with an RBI while Murray, Porter, Schilling and Cervantes were all 1-for-3.

Cody Shimp allowed 2 runs and struck out 6 in 7 innings of work to earn the win from the mound while Landon Higgerson picked up the save.

The win improves Mansfied’s record to 7-2 overall. After a day off today the team is back in action for a pair of games this weekend as they host Syracuse on Saturday and Cortland on Sunday.
