Destroyers Rally Past Dansville
The Mansfield Destroyers improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in as many days at Shaute Field as they rallied from a 4-0 deficit to beat the Dansville Gliders 13-9 on Thursday, June 10.
The Gliders quickly took and early lead as they capitalized on a Mansfield error to score 3 1st inning runs. They added another one in the 3rd to go up 4-0. That lead soon evaporated as Mansfield’s bats woke up in the bottom half of the inning and produced 3 runs to cut Dansville’s lead to 4-3. A double by Michael Cervantes scored Randall Hien after he was hit by a pitch, then Cervantes and Bryce Porter (walk) scored on a single by Theron Schilling.
Mansfield eventually took the lead in the 5th as Bryce Porter, Willie Schwarick, and Schilling all cross home plate on walks to go up 6-4. Schilling again delivered at the plate in the 6th to score Schwarick to make it 8-4.
The Gliders scored solo runs in both the 7th and 8th innings but the Destroyers countered with 5 runs over those two innings to lead 13-6 heading into the final inning. Dansville attempted a rally of their own, and cut the lead to 13-9 with 3 runs but the Destroyers held on for the final out to score their second consecutive win.
Schilling led Mansfield at the plate going a perfect 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Cervantes, coming off his “Player of the Night” performance against Hornell, was 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Hien, Porter, Schwarick, John Whooley, and Will Yarbro added the remainder of the Destroyers’ 11 hits. Hunter Kendall started and earned the win as he went 5 & 2/3 innings allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits with 2 walks and a strikeout.
Mansfield (2-1) travels to Genesee this afternoon for a doubleheader with the Rapids (2-0) before they return home on Saturday for a rematch with the Gliders.
