Destroyers Arrive in Mansfield
MANSFIELD, PA — The Mansfield Destroyers players, coaches, and staff are now in Mansfield prior to the team’s season opener Monday at Batavia.
This year’s roster of 25 players, as well as coaches and staff came together for the first team event on Friday at Shaute Field, where uniforms were passed out and introductions made.
The Destroyers practiced twice on both Saturday and Sunday, working with coaches on hitting, basic defensive plays, and general skills. An intra-squad scrimmage was played Sunday afternoon to work on in-game situations.
Players, staff, and coaches also participated in team events around the community throughout the opening weekend, including team dinners hosted by local families, at Mansfield restaurant Hotties Hot off the Grill and Church of the New Covenant. The events gave members of the organization an opportunity to get to know each other, as well as different team supporters and community members throughout Mansfield and the Twin Tiers region.
This year’s Destroyers roster is represented by 12 states, including those as far away as California, Florida, Texas, and Georgia. Eight players hail from Pennsylvania. Five players return from the team’s first season in 2019: Blake Murray, Connor Hong, Mason Vaughan, Kyle Smith, and John Wheeler.
The Destroyers first game takes place Monday, June 7th, at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia, New York, against the PGCBL’s Batavia Muckdogs. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. Mansfield’s home opener is set for Wednesday, June 9th, against the Hornell Dodgers at Shaute Field, with first pitch at 5:20 p.m.
