Destroyers Destroy Hornell, 19-0

by Ed Weaver - June 10, 2021

Kyle Smith threw a one-hit shutout to help lead the Mansfield Destroyers to a 19-0 win over Hornell in their home opener at Mansfield University’s Shaute Field on Wednesday, June 9.

The Destroyers’ offense got to work early as their first three hitters reached base and scored. Mansfield put up 6 runs in the 1st to jump out to an early lead, which they would never look back. After increasing their lead to 7-0 in the 2nd Mansfield’s Michael Cervantes hit a 3-run home run in the bottom of the 3rd to tack on 4 more runs for the home team to further increase their lead to 11-0.

After a delay for thunder the Destroyers scored 8 more runs in the 4th inning to push the lead to 19-0, which they held until the middle of the 7th when the game was called for the 10-run rule.

The Destroyers’ 19 runs came on 14 hits at the plate, led by Cervantes going 4-for-5 with 4 RBIs and 4 runs scored. David Wiley was 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored. John Wheeler also went 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs and scored 2 runs. Randall Hien was 1-for-3, Willie Schwarick was 2-for-5, and Tyler Castelli was 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Schwarick also drove in 3 runs.

Smith scored the win as he struck out 7 and walked 3 in 6 innings of work. Blake Murray came on in relief in the 7th and allowed 1 hit and 1 walk.

The win evens up the Destroyers’ record to .500 (1-1) after dropping their season-opener 8-7 to Rochester on Tuesday. The team returns to Shaute Field Thursday evening against Dansville (0-0).
