Destroyers Mercy Rule Genesee

by Ed Weaver - June 28, 2021

A six-run 4th inning led the Mansfield Destroyers to a 10-run, 13-3 win in 7 innings over the Genesee Rapids at Shaute Field on Sunday, June 27. The win is the Destroyer’s 12th of the season and their 3rd of the weekend.

The Destroyers trailed 2-0 after the top of the 1st but rallied to put themselves in front for good in the bottom half of the inning. After Tyler Castelli singled to reach base he later scored on a John Whooley double to center. Theron Schilling scored during the next at bat after he was hit by a pitch to tie the game. Whooley later scored on a base hit by Connor Larson. Larson later scored on a wild pitch to give Mansfield a 4-2 lead.

Mansfield made it 5-2 in the 2nd as Lucas Costello scored off a fielding error as Whooley reached 1st. After a solo run by the Rapids in the top of the 3rd Mansfield added two more runs in the bottom of the 3rd to further increase their lead. Larson crossed home plate for the 2nd time on the night and Jalen Buster scored on an RBI single by Castelli to make it 7-3.

Genesee was held scoreless the remainder of the game, which setup the Destroyers’ 4th inning slug fest.

With the first two hitters aboard Chay Yeager hit into a fielder’s choice, which he would later score along with James Broderick, to make it 9-3. A triple by Buster scored Zahan Meyer to make it 10-3 then scored one at bat later on a single by Costello. Costello scored the next at bat as Castelli tripled to right. He later scored on a balk to give the Destroyers’ the 10-run advantage they needed to end the game early.

Castelli led all hitters on the night, going 5-for-5 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Larson was 2-for-2, Whooley and Yeager were both 2-for-4, and Costello, Meyer, and Buster added the remaining 3 or the Destroyers’ 14 hits.

Hunter Kendall started and improved to 3-0 on the season as he scattered 4 hits over 5 innings to go along with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts and just 1 earned run.

The win improves the Destroyers’ record to 12-4 to keep them atop the NYCBL’s Western Division by a game and a half over Hornell (10-5). Mansfield hits the road for three straight road games, including a pair of games at Hornell before returning home on July 1 against Dansville.
