Destroyers Sweep Hornell

by Ed Weaver - July 23, 2021

It has been 25 days since the Mansfield Destroyers last played at home, but their return to Shaute Field on Thursday, July 22 was a memorable one. The Destroyers swept the Hornell Dodgers 10-2 and 8-2 in a doubleheader to take the top spot in the NYCBL’s Western Division.

In game one the Destroyers scored 2 runs in the 2nd, 4 in the 5th, 2 in the 6th and 2 in the 7th. Tyler Castelli was 3-for-5 with an RBI at the plate to lead Mansfield. Randall Hien, James Broderick, Will Yarbro and Bryce Porter had 2 hits each, and Lucas Costello and Zahan Meyer added solo hits. Broderick drove in 3 runs while Hien and Meyer each drove in a pair of runs.

Chic DeGaetano went the distance on the mound to earn the win, allowing 2 runs (both earned) on 6 hits in 7 innings with a walk and 4 strikeouts.

In game two Mansfield jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the 1st. Hornell added solo runs in the 3rd and 5th innings to cut the lead to 5-2, but the Destroyers scored three runs in the 6th to push their lead to 8-2.

Castelli, Costello, Theron Schilling, and Yarbro all had two hits at the plate while Broderick rounded out the Destroyers’ 9 hits in the game. Schilling and Broderick drove in two runs each, Castelli hit a triple, and Hien drew a pair of walks. Cody Shimp scored the win with a complete game as he allowed 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 10 in 7 innings.

The wins improve Mansfield to 27-7-1, catapulting them ahead of Hornell for the NYCBL’s Western Division lead. The Destroyers are scheduled to be back at home for a doubleheader this Saturday against Rochester starting at 2:00 p.m. to wind down the regular season.
