PIAA D4 AA Wrestling Regionals Highlights
On March 1st and 2nd, the PIAA District 4 class AA wrestling regionals were held at Williamsport High School. Athletes who finished top 4 of their weight class move on to the State Finals in Hershey. Three athletes from Canton Area High School, and two from North Penn-Liberty competed and qualified for states.
North Penn-Liberty’s Bryce Pequignot faced off against Montgomery’s Manny Stoltzfus for the 107 weight class regional title. Stoltzfus scored the first point of the match with this escape after two periods. Moments he scores two more on a takedown. At the start of the third period, Pequignot starts on the bottom and scores one point with an escape. Pequignot scored a penalty point as Stoltzfus flees the mat. However, Stoltzfus kept the pressure on and scored another two points from a takedown, ending the match with the decision in his favor, 5-2.
Next, Canton’s Lyle Vermilya competed at 114 against Line Mountain’s Brock Rothermel and was pinned in 1:16.
Then, at 160 Canton’s Hudson Ward fought for first place against Montgomery’s Conner Harer. Harer pinned Ward to claim the title.
Although they didn’t make it to the championship bout, North Penn-Liberty’s Brayden Pequignot and Canton’s Holden Ward fought tooth and nail through the consolation bracket to claim fourth place in their weight classes, confirming their qualification for states.
These athletes will be on the road next weekend, Thursday March 7th to Saturday March 9th to participate at states.
