The Weekly Highlights 07/21/14 – 07/25/14

A look at this week's highlights on Wellsboro Home Page

by Home Page Staff - July 26, 2014

It’s time once again to take a look at what happened the past week. The Weekly Highlights are a great way to catch up, but don’t forget that you can always watch the full stories from either our front page or the archives section.

Montoursville traveled to Wellsboro on Thursday night for the sectional championship series. Montoursville got off to a fast start with a solo home run over the left field fence. Wellsboro answered, plating two runs – but hurt themselves with costly errors. The rest of the game was a heavy-weight fight, with both teams not backing down. Montoursville put the game away with a two run shot off the bat, claiming victory with a score of 8-7.

The beginning of the second game looked good for Wellsboro as they got off to a great start defensively. But the Montoursville bats were hot, kicking the game off with an early home run. Montoursville continued to pull ahead from there, securing an 11 run lead by the third inning. Wellsboro however did not give up, scoring a run off a solo shot in the bottom of the third. They tried their best defensively, but the bats stayed silent the whole game and Montoursville claimed the sectional championship, defeating Wellsboro 11-1.

There are 109 swimmers (between the ages of 4 & 18) currently registered for the Wellsboro team this year. Any child who can swim consecutively for 25 yards (one length of the pool) can join the team for next year. The league itself lays over (or mimics) the PA High School District 4 region. The league will accept additional community teams if they provide a letter of interest to the league.

This Wellsboro Summer Swim Team has been the champions for four years (28 consecutive meets). They experienced their first loss recently at Bucknell against the Lewisburg Gators.

In-person registration is held in May, 2015, by contacting the Wellsboro Parks & Recreation Department. You can visit their website at You can also visit the swim team website at

Twelve members of the Wellsboro High School football team traveled to Indianapolis to participate in the NFL High School Player Development National Seven on Seven tournament. Every NFL team was represented in the tournament. The Hornets won the opportunity to represent the Buffalo Bills at this event by winning both the district and regional tournaments in Mansfield, PA and Lyons, NY respectively.

They flew out to Indianapolis on July 13th along with many of their parents and siblings. The team participated in eight games in three days, playing against schools like Booker T. Washington High School – currently the number one high school team in the country. This Miami-based school’s roster included 12 division-one recruits. Wellsboro went 1-7 in Indianapolis, but gained new skills and and understanding of the game. They were visited by speakers each night that included past and current NFL players.

Two men, two organizations – joined together for one mission! Dr. Nathan Rinnert – Chair of Mansfield University Music Department, and Robert Bokor – internationally acclaimed Serbian-Swiss conductor and violinist and EMMF orchestra member. Their mission this summer: to encourage and mentor young musicians that have come to String Orchestra and Brass Camps. These camps are held in conjunction with Mansfield University and EMMF.

These camps end tomorrow after a final concert. This event will take place on Saturday, July 26th at 3:30 PM in the Steadman Auditorium at Mansfield University. The public is welcome to attend as free admission is offered. This is a great opportunity for everyone in the community, especially for parents and their children who are interested in the different instruments represented. Following the camp concert, the first Endless Mountain Music Festival concert will be held in the same auditorium. The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Ticket cost will be $10.00 per person (in a pre-ordered party of 10 or more) and $25.00 for individuals.
