The League of Extraordinary Swimmers

by Sara Vogt - July 22, 2014

Today, Home Page correspondent Sara Vogt spoke with Paul Kurtz – President of the Wellsboro Summer Swim Team and GSVAL Parent Representative at Packer Park Pool. The Wellsboro Summer Swim Team was having their last home competition against Central Columbia.

There are 109 swimmers (between the ages of 4 & 18) currently registered for the Wellsboro team this year. Any child who can swim consecutively for 25 yards (one length of the pool) can join the team for next year. The league itself lays over (or mimics) the PA High School District 4 region. The league will accept additional community teams if they provide a letter of interest to the league.

This Wellsboro Summer Swim Team has been the champions for four years (28 consecutive meets). They experienced their first loss recently at Bucknell against the Lewisburg Gators.

Wellsboro competes against 13 other teams within the Greater Susquehanna Valley Aquatic League.

Their season runs from the last day of school in Wellsboro until the last Saturday in July – it is a very quick season, a total of two months from start to finish. Their 2014 season ends next Friday & Saturday in Williamsport, with the Championships. Paul says that “this is a great family activity that keeps kids active and healthy during the summer months while spending time with the entire family!” In-person registration is held in May, 2015, by contacting the Wellsboro Parks & Recreation Department.

You can visit their website at http://www.wellsbororecreation.org. You can also visit the swim team website at www.wellsboro.swimtopia.com. They accept any child from Wellsboro and every surrounding community within Tioga County.
