The Psychology of a Self-Portrait
The Gmeiner Art and Cultural Center was given to the Wellsboro Community by Arthur J. Gmeiner. Mr. Gmeiner was born here in Tioga County and he wanted to leave a place for us to gather to enjoy the arts. This month’s exhibit is the art of one woman, Tania O’Donnell. Tania is an artist working and living in Havertown, a western suburb of Philadelphia, PA. She holds a Masters degree from the University of the Arts, and is a recipient of the Sylvia G. Wexler Award for Excellence in Graduate study. In 2012 she was named a Creative Incubator Grant Recipient and Wells Fargo Fellow by the Corzo Center for the Creative Economy. Tania is a founder and the Program Director for the Red Barn Arts Center in Wellsboro, PA where she maintains a summer studio. She is also an Upper School Art Teacher at The Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, PA. She shared her passion for the arts as an artist and as a teacher who encourages her students to pursue their gifts.
Rembrant, one of the greatest painters in European history, did a self portrait every year. Tania has a similar practice. But why? You will have to watch the video to find out!
Remember Tania’s work will be on display for the month of November. She also holds a summer workshop here at Red Barn Arts Center in Wellsboro. The piano music in today’s feature was composed by Scott Joplin and performed by Tania’s husband, Jeff Thomas at the Gmeiner.
Learn more about Tania, her husband & their work at the Red Barn Art Center in this feature!
