Wellsboro Volleyball sweeps Coudersport

by Ed Weaver - October 16, 2018

The Wellsboro Varsity Volleyball team ran their current win streak to 6 games as they swept Coudersport during Senior Night on Monday, October 15.

“Two of the girls have been here all four years. Alaina (Goetsch) joined us and Grace (Brueilly) is a junior that is going to graduate early,” said head coach Sharon Zuchowski. “We’re going to miss them. They keep it light, they keep it fun for us.”

Wellsboro cruised in all three sets.

In the first they jumped out to an early 4-0 lead then increased the lead to 10-3 and kept the pedal down to take the first set 25-11. The Lady Hornets repeated their first set momentum and were up as much as 16-9 before closing the set out, 25-15. In the third set Wellsboro started with a 7-0 lead and cruised to another 25-11 victory.

Junior Caitlyn Callahan led the Lady Hornets with 15 kills and 4 digs, junior Megan Starkweather had 17 assists and 16 points (8 aces), senior Heidi Zuchowski had 12 points and 6 aces, and junior Ryann Adams recorded 11 points (4 aces) and 4 digs. Goetsch and Callahan both added 4 digs, Starkweather pitched in with 2 blocks, and sophomores Breighanna Kemp and Bailey Monks each added a block.

In the JV game Wellsboro won 2-0 (25-22, 25-18) to improve to 9-6 overall.

The Varsity team’s win improves the Lady Hornets’ record to 14-1 (9-1 NTL Large School Division). Wellsboro travels to Athens later this evening then turns around and hosts rival North Penn-Liberty on Thursday, October 18.

“It’s tough to prepare when the games are so back-to-back so we try to use the game as much as we can,” Zuchowski said. “We’ll then fill in on Wednesday to tweak for Thursday’s match.”
