The Weekly Highlights 09/22/14 – 09/26/14

by Home Page Staff - September 27, 2014

It’s time once again to take a look at what happened the past week. The Weekly Highlights are a great way to catch up, but don’t forget that you can always watch the full stories from either our front page or the archives section.

HOME GAME: HORNETS VS SAYRE

The Wellsboro Hornets won their fourth straight game this past Friday night, 63 to nothing. The Hornet defense has only been scored on once this season. That touchdown was a fluke created in the confusion of a broken play, allowing the Bucktail Bucks on the scoreboard. This past Friday night, the Hornets faced of against the Sayre Redskins.

THE FABULOUS 1890’s FESTIVAL

On Friday and Saturday, September 26th and 27th, the town of Mansfield will celebrate their annual Fabulous 1890s festival. This is the 23rd year for the festival, which was originally created to celebrate the historic event of the first night football game ever played, which occurred in Mansfield in 1892. The re-enactment of the football game is still a major attraction, as are the fireworks, great food, music and activities for all ages.

Home Page had the opportunity to speak with Joyce Tice and Dennis Miller, two of the key organizers of the event. They provided insight about the history of the festival and some of this year’s main events.

Check out the 1890s Festival this weekend! It’s a great way to end your summer! You can find more information about the festival at their website: www.1890sweekend.com.

STUDENTS CAMP FOR FRONT-ROW SEATS

Most Penn State Students are huge fans of their football team and they are not afraid to express that. Recently, this was shown on September 8, when students peacefully rallied around campus and on Beaver Avenue after the NCAA announced they reduced the sanctions placed on the football program. Some students will even camp out in front of the football stadium for days in order to get the best seats in the house. This tent city is called Nittanyville. The mission of Nittanyville members is to get as close to the action at the football games as possible. Students create groups of ten or less and set up camp outside of Gate A at Beaver Stadium every Wednesday through Saturday of home football games.

This weekend is Penn State’s homecoming game so we are encouraging members of Tioga County to come out and support your state school as they take on Northwestern.

GETTIN’ DIRTY IS GOOD FOR YOU

On this Home Page feature, Chris Firestone, Wild Plant Program Manager for the PA Dept of Conservation and Natural Resources talked with us about how dirt makes you happy, our autumn leaf color changes, pollinators and the differences between bees and wasps.

Chris shared with us that in the soil there are antidepressant microbes called Mycobacterium vaccae that stimulate serotonin production, which helps us to be happier and more relaxed. There are many studies about these microbes and their effect on arthritis, cancer and cognitive thinking – (many reasons to get into the garden and dig out the summer flowers to prepare for fall!)
