by Home Page Staff - March 7-8, 2015

It’s time once again to take a look at what happened the past week. The Weekly Highlights are a great way to catch up, but don’t forget that you can always watch the full stories from either our front page or the archives section.
Did you know that not getting enough sleep can literally kill you? Monday began National Sleep Awareness Week and this feature broadcast is specifically designed to make you aware of the importance of sleep.

We visit the Sleep Center at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital and talk with Dr. Russell Gombosi and Bonnie Kendrick, RPSGT. We also get the opportunity to tour the sleep center. Best of all, we find out just what happens while we sleep and the huge physical dangers of not getting enough.

The Sleep Center can diagnose and treat a variety of sleep disorders. Untreated, sleep disorders may negatively affect an individual’s quality of life and make it hard to carry out daily activities.
On Wednesday, February 25th, a public meeting and hearing was held at the Wellsboro Fire Annex about the Wellsboro Johnston Airport expansion project. Citizens came out to hear from representatives from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and Clean Earth, Incorporated of Williamsport. Questions were posed and addressed during a Q&A session and testimony from the community was given to be responded to by the DEP and Clean Earth at a later date.
It’s time to get “All Jazzed Up” – the Endless Mountain Music Festival’s Winter Jazz Fest is this weekend, March 6-8, here in Wellsboro.
There will be Friday and Saturday evening concerts, a Saturday morning jazz workshop and Sunday brunch with live music by a jazz artist.

Another opportunity to hear some great music is happening on March 13th with Simple Gifts, who will be performing at the Deane Center Coolidge Theatre at 7:30pm. Simple Gifts is a combination of the talents of Linda Littleton and Karen Hirshon. Find out about these weekend events here!
The first performance of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ was held at the Imperial Theater in New York City on September 22, 1964. This musical also won the Tony Award for Best Musical, Best in Score and Book. In November of this year, Fiddler will once again be opening on Broadway for the fifth time.

Bruce Applegate, the Executive Director of the Wellsboro High School Theatre says, “you do not have to get a bus ticket or travel to New York City, you just have to come up here to Wellsboro High School and enjoy a tremendous production by the students of this school district and their production of Fiddler on the Roof.” The dates and times of the performances are March 5, 6,and 7th at 7:30 PM and a matinee on March 7th at 2:00 PM. All showings will be held in the high school auditorium.
Grab your calendar and spend a few moments with us as we get ready for what’s coming next in our community!
Rep. Matt Baker joined his colleagues in the state House in unanimously passing legislation designating the week of March 15th through the 22nd as Maple Producers Week in Pennsylvania. The resolution was authored by Baker’s Potter County neighbor, Rep. Martin Causer. Baker said Pennsylvania ranks fifth in the nation in maple syrup production, and according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, last year the Commonwealth produced 146,000 gallons of syrup with a production value of more than $4.7 million. The Potter-Tioga Maple Syrup Producers Association will hold its 11th Annual Maple Weekend on March 21-22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

We want to encourage our Wellsboro Home Page viewers to participate in the 4th Annual Casey L. Patrick Memorial Basketball Game. The event comes to the Wellsboro High School Gymnasium on Saturday, March 14th at 5:30 PM.

The Hamilton Gibson Children’s chorus will perform Children of Eden, a two-act musical play with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartzand. The musical is based on the Book of Genesis. It all takes place Thursday, March 19th through Sunday, March 22nd in the Steadman Theater at Mansfield University. For more information please call 570-724-2079.
