Vault of Treasured Memories: Cider Mill
Today we begin an exciting new series titled The Vault of Treasured Broadcasts. Since January of 2014 Home Page has produced over 1,500 stories and counting! And we’ve enjoyed every one of them. Today, we’d like to highlight one of our favorite features from The Vault of Treasured Broadcasts. Let’s take a trip BACK to Mansfield Cider Mill in October of 2016. You can find more of our classic and memorable features listed in our archives.
It’s fall! Which means leaves are changing and time for fall foods! I’m talking pumpkin… sweet potato…. pears, cranberries, and apples!
The great thing about the bright yellow-orange varieties of squash, sweet potatoes and pumpkin, is that they contain beta-carotene, which is a provitamin A carotenoid. Carotenoids act as antioxidants. These are substances that may prevent or delay some types of cell damage. You know what else is especially rich in antioxidants? Apples! Do you know the difference between cider and apple juice? Apple juice is filtered to remove solids and it is pasteurized so stays fresh longer. Because fresh Cider has not been filtered, it needs to be stored in the refrigerator. We have a variety of apples grown, locally. Today we will visit a local, family owned apple cider mill.
Mansfield Cider Mill provided a demonstration of their work and what it takes to make apple cider, from start to finish. This is their 70th year in business! Watch today’s feature video to see how it’s made. If you would like to visit the Mansfield Cider Mill, the address is listed below. You can also visit their Facebook page.
