The Vault – Winter Driving Safety

Chief Bodine presents safety tips for driving in bad weather

by Home Page Staff - December 18, 2019

Today we want to take a look back into our Vault of Treasured Broadcasts. This time, we want to revisit a feature that is timeless in its advice and very helpful this time of year. Let’s take a ride back to January 24 of 2017 with Chief Bodine for The Briefing: Winter Driving Safety.

Have you ever been in a dangerous situation on the roads during the winter months? Hopefully the answer to that question is no, however, if you ever do find yourself in a hazardous condition on the roads, we have some advice for you! Home Page Correspondent, Morgan Koziar had the opportunity to go on a ride along with the Wellsboro Police Chief, Jim Bodine to find out more information about driving in the winter. Chief Bodine provided some helpful insight on the things that he encounters on the roads as a police office, and he also shared some helpful tips and advice to keep you and your family safe on the roads this winter! For starters, Chief Bodine recommends that you only leave your home if necessary.

Because of the fluctuating weather in Tioga County, we as residents never know what to expect! It’s important to prepare as best as you can by checking the weather ahead of time, and giving yourself extra time to arrive to your destination. It’s always a good idea to keep some items in your vehicle in case an emergency was to arise. Items such as a flashlight, blanket, warm clothing, water, and ice scrapers. If you find yourself sliding in your vehicle or you encounter black ice, don’t panic! To keep yourself and your vehicle as safe as possible, you don’t want to make any sudden moves. Lightly apply pressure to your brakes and try to regain control of the vehicle in a straight path.

As you can expect, Chief Bodine has encountered many dangerous situations in his 19 years of law enforcement. Chief Bodine talked about a situation regarding himself and black ice where he too had to regain control of the vehicle to prevent an accident. The more experience that you have driving in bad weather can help, however, experience doesn’t make you invincible from hazardous situations. That is why it is crucial that you only leave your house if necessary when the roads are bad.
