Troy Claims Homecoming Victory Over Wellsboro

by Wyatt Wood - October 2, 2023

The Troy Trojans steamrolled the Hornets last Friday, on Homecoming night, 51-7. Here’s what happened.

Troy came out strong in the first quarter, punching their way down to the Hornet 30. Then on an option play, Trojan QB Evan Woodward called his own number, saw daylight on the outside, burned the secondary – touchdown Trojans! Wellsboro blocked the point-after-attempt, making the score 6-0 Troy with 9:52 seconds remaining in the first.

With just over 3 minutes left in the quarter, Troy marched their way to the red zone, set up on the Hornet 15. The Trojans faked the run, Woodward dropped back to pass, found Brendan Gilliland who trotted it through to the end zone. Troy went for 2, dishing it to Gilliland again on the outside – putting Troy up 14-0.

Second quarter, Troy kept the pressure on as they continued to dominate the Wellsboro defense. An outside handoff to Jackson Taylor found the end zone. The 2 point conversion was no good, Troy led 20-0.

With only seconds left in the half, Troy wouldn’t let up their assault. Woodward dropped back deep, faked, then sent the ball up right into the hands of Gilliland for the score! Woodward called his own number for the 2-point conversion, and smashed his way through the line. 28-0, Trojans.

Third quarter – Troy still marching their way down the field, lined up on the goal line, made a wedge and pushed through the defenses to score. For the 2 point attempt, Charles Oldroyde received the outside handoff and went untouched past the pylon. Troy led, 36-0.

With seconds remaining in the third, Wellsboro’s Ryder Bowen found some daylight with a big run to the red zone.

The Hornets capitalized on the position going into the fourth quarter. Hayes Campbell rumbled through the center for the touchdown. Johnathan Carl’s extra point was good, making the score 36-7, Trojans.

Troy put up two more touchdowns on the night, to claim the homecoming victory, 51-7.

The Troy Trojans will be back in action Friday, on the road at Towanda, while the Hornets travel to Wyalusing.
