Trojans shutout Spartans to win D4 AA Quarterfinals

by Wyatt Wood - November 6, 2023

On Saturday, November 4th the Troy Trojans were invaded by the Hughesville Spartans at Alperon Park in Troy. The Tojans successfully repelled the Spartan advancement, shutting them out 36-0.

Clayton Smith scored the Trojans’ first touchdown on the night. Woodward then hit Brendan Gilliland on a 5 and out route for the 2 point conversion, starting Troy’s night off 8-0.

The Trojans second touchdown came in the second quarter off another Smith run. Gilliland followed as he ran in the 2 point conversion, putting Troy up 16.

With under 30 seconds before heading into the locker room. Troy once again found themselves deep in Spartan territory and went to the skies as Woodward hit Lincoln Chimicks with a short pass over the middle for the score. The point after attempt was no good, and Troy’s wall held strong, 22-0.

Fresh out of the locker room, with 9:12 remaining in the third – the Trojans lined up on the Spartan 37. Woodward, in the pocket, sent the ball over the center to Chimicks who went untouched over the goal line. Woodward ran in for the two point conversion, increasing the Trojan lead, 30-0.

Troy Scored one more time on the night from Mason Smith, making it 36-0 to end the third quarter.

The Hughesville Spartans left their Trojan horse at home, unable to break through Troy’s defenses for the rest of the ball game.

Troy will be back on the field in Alperon Park this Friday, Nov 10th at 7pm as they host the Line Mountain Eagles.
