Tigers take Margaret Berguson Trophy!

by Ed Weaver - January 12, 2015

The Wellsboro Hornets and North Penn-Mansfield Tigers took to the basketball court Saturday night in the first annual Margaret “Peg” Berguson Memorial Trophy game between the two rival schools.

Wellsboro controlled the opening tip and scored the game’s first points as Kieron Smethers hit a close jumper to give the Hornets an early 2-0 lead. North Penn-Mansfield would answer on their next possession and would later go up 7-4 on the Hornets after a tough layup by Bo Burleigh.

Then the Hornets took the lead on back-to-back layups from Smethers and Pietropola before the Tigers finished the opening quarter with a 13-12 lead.

The Tigers started the second quarter with a quick bucket on an inbound play to increase their lead to 15-12, but the Hornets answered right away as Pietropola cleaned up a missed layup to bring the score to 15-14.

North Penn-Mansfield’s Bryce Zaparzynski put the Tigers up 17-16 on a layup, followed by a three-pointer from Dayton Wood to increase their lead to 20-16.

The Tigers went on to outscore Wellsboro 11-6 in the quarter and were up on the Hornets 24-18 at the half.

Following the break, Wellsboro’s Brandon Lamphier connected on a long-range jumper to pull the Hornets to within three points. Pietropola then brought the Hornets to within a point after a three-pointer of his own.

The Hornets would later tie the game with 4:16 remaining in the third quarter on an easy layup by Smethers. Smethers would follow that up Moments later as he skied for a dunk on a Hornet fast break. It was neck and neck for the remainder of the third quarter with the Tigers holding a slim 38-36 advantage heading into the final frame.

Then North Penn-Mansfield went on a run in the final minutes of the fourth quarter pulling away from the Hornets down the stretch for a 58-46 Northern Tier League victory.

Following the game, Wellsboro High School Principal David Krick presented the memorial trophy to the Berguson family and the winning North Penn-Mansfield Tigers.

Be sure to watch today’s feature broadcast to find out how this new memorial trophy game got started and watch interviews with Hornets’ head coach Todd Outman and members of the victorious North Penn-Mansfield Tigers.
