Tigers Claim Berguson Trophy Game

by Ed Weaver - January 11, 2016

For the second consecutive year, the North Penn-Mansfield Boys Basketball team topped Wellsboro in the Margaret “Peg” Berguson Memorial Trophy Game on Saturday, January 9.

The Hornets outscored the host Tigers 19-13 in the opening quarter as sophomores Dalton Prough and Quinn Henry each scored six points. Mansfield made up ground in the second by outscoring the Hornets 12-7 and trailed 26-25 at halftime.

Wellsboro lost their lead in the third quarter as North Penn-Mansfield’s Brock Burleigh scored six of his 12 points in the quarter. After Dalton Prough picked up his third foul and a technical, all the momentum shifted to Mansfield as the Tigers began to pull away. Junior Jacob Singer managed to keep the Hornets in it as he hit a buzzer-beating three at the end of the quarter to trail the Tigers 40-39 entering the final quarter.

Singer hit an early three to regain the lead, but North Penn-Mansfield went on to outscore Wellsboro 17-9 in the final frame, as Dalton Prough fouled out early and the entire team struggled to get shots to fall.

The Hornets forced Mansfield to shoot foul shots as they trailed late in the game, and the Tigers went 5-of-7 down the stretch to send the Hornets home with a 57-48 loss.

Singer led all scorers on the night with 17 points, with four made three-pointers, and grabbed eight rebounds. Dalton Prough finished with 15, Henry scored 12, and senior Dawson Prough pitched in with four points.

In the JV game, the Hornets won a nail-biter as Mansfield missed a final second three point shot attempt at the buzzer to win 34-31 and keep their undefeated season intact at 11-0. Sophomore Collin Pietropola led the team with 10 points and freshman Brandyn Tuttle had eight.

The loss drops the Hornets’ record to 7-4 (2-2 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Tuesday, January 12 at Athens.
