The holidays are over and we are officially in the heart of winter. The Christmas tree has been taken down, all the decorations are packed away and suddenly the house looks a little bare and sparse, much like the outside. I find that a bit depressing, since we will be tucked inside for a few months yet. So, I thought I would share some easy and inexpensive updates you could do around the house that will pick up your spirits without breaking the bank. Any of these projects can be done in a few hours and for under a 100 dollars.

How many of you have a basic, traditional sofa in a neutral color? There’s nothing wrong with it, but you can give it an instant makeover by simply changing the throw pillows. Throw pillows are an easy and affordable way to refresh your décor in any season. They can be in bold colors and pattern s that contrast each other or in similar hues with decorative trims and ruffles. There is a multitude of sizes, colors, patterns and textures to choose from, so experiment and have fun.

Another quick update is as easy as changing a lamp shade. Everyone I know owns at least one lamp that still has the plain cream shade that came with it from the retailer. Why not try something in a bold color, or even better, a bold color with a pattern? Like throw pillows, lamp shades too come in a variety of styles, colors and patterns that can inject new life into an ordinary object. The cadleabra chandelier is a staple style of fixture used in many homes. Pretty on it’s own, but if your looking for a change, add some mini shades! These little add-ons can compliment any style from formal and sophisticated to fun and whimsical.

My next suggestion is to create a gallery wall with things you already have in your home. We all have family photos that are either tucked out of sight in albums or covering a tabletop that makes it difficult to dust. Why not display them in a way that showcases them? Or you could choose to use items that have a similar theme. A grouping can be unified either through color or subject matter. Inexpensive frames can be purchased or a can of spray paint can be used on ones you already have. Another fun option is to use completely unrelated objects to make a truly unique gallery wall that fills up an expanse of empty wall space without costing a lot of money.

This next project is one I recently did myself just before the holidays and that was to change the hardware on some of my cabinets. The difference you can create by doing this is amazing and the only tool you need is a screwdriver to transform your kitchen, your bathroom or even a piece of furniture. Choices range from rustic to contemporary and everything in between. The variety of styles and finishes to choose from is staggering and sometimes the prices can be as well, but with with some savvy shopping you can get a lot of bang for your buck. I was able to purchase 34 new handles for my kitchen cabinets and drawers for less than 80 dolllars. I also changed the 4 knobs on a sideboard from basic white to white porcelain with black and silver details. A package of 4 only cost me 10 dollars and now that sideboard pops!

My last suggestion will not cost you any money and will even get you moving….the furniture that is. A simple shift of the furniture can give a room a completely different feel or swap furniture from one room to another to change the look. If your back is not up to this challenge, try rearranging your accessories. Switch up the display on your fireplace mantel or move a painting from the bedroom, where no one gets to see it, into the dining or living room. Changing the surroundings of an object will give it a whole new personality and freshen your space at the same time. If your in the mood to pare down, I suggest packing up some of your items and storing them. When you’re in the mood for a change, bring them back out and store what you have been displaying. It will feel like you just redecorated the room without spending a dime!

Remember, your homes potential is only limited by your imagination and if you run out of ideas, I guarantee I can come up with some new ones.
