The Tale Behind the Tale – Sneak Peek of “Shrew: A Tale Retold”
We spent some time this past Monday night with the cast of Shrew: A Tale Retold and their Director, Clare Ritter, at the Deane Center here in Wellsboro.
Shrew: A Tale Retold is the Shakespeare play Taming of the Shrew that Clare Ritter has waited years to tell the storyline that love is redeeming. We believe it is high brow when we think of Shakespeare, but Clare said it was written for the commoner. She went on to say, ” When you take a play like The Taming Of The Shrew, which is a comedy, bring it into some modern language and tell the story as a romantic comedy, everybody can relate.”
Clare has loved The Taming of the Shrew since high school, and she had always wanted to portray Katherine as the leading lady, not an unpleasant person who is supposed to be disliked in the play. Clare says,” Kate comes to life in the play as a flawed character like we all are, but eventually redeemed through love. Isn’t that what we are all looking for?” Clare wants us to come to the play for a night of laughter and an opportunity to fall in love with the characters and Shakespear!
I was able to interview Bianca ( Grace Bishop), who told me, ” Shakespear is so witty, and he has so many characters and just the way they all fit together. There are plenty of life lessons written into the play as well.”
I was also able to catch up with Hortensio (Brett Kennedy), who expressed, ” I am a gentleman who is desperate to get married, trying to court the young Bianca; however, she does not want much to do with me.”
In the video presentation in this broadcast, you’ll see some of the cast and the outfits they chose to wear for the play.
