The Story Behind One Of Mansfield’s Oldest-Running Businesses

by Deb Bastian - May 6, 2022

One of Mansfield’s longest running retail stores; Cooper’s Sporting Goods has been in downtown Mansfield since the early 60’s. Originally National Sporting Goods, Chuck Cooper purchased the business in 1964, renamed it Cooper’s Sporting Goods and moved to the current location on West Wellsboro St. Tim Payne purchased the business from Chuck Cooper in 1997. He has kept local hunters and sportsmen supplied for the last 25 years.

Tim grew up in Mansfield and has worked in local retail in businesses that are no longer here including The Card Shop and the Super Duper. When he became aware that Cooper’s would be available to purchase, Tim was ready to go into another form of retail. As a hunter and lover of everything outdoors, the business venture has been perfect.

Lately, the most popular item in the store is ammunition, which also is hard to keep in stock. Tim limits his customers to one box of ammunition a day so that he can do his best to meet his customers’ needs. He shared that “I spend a lot of time on the internet searching for inventory”.

Cooper’s is a locally owned gem in Mansfield’s energized shopping area. New shops and great restaurants are excited to have you visit. We hope you enjoy our interview with Tim and encourage everyone to shop small and shop local!
