The Power Of Freedom
FREEDOM! In the 1995 movie, Braveheart, as Mel Gibson is beheaded he yells out, “Freedom!” It is an incredibly powerful declaration. The desire for freedom is universal and enduring.
Likely we have all experienced different types of freedom different types of limitations on that freedom, and the fall out of too much freedom. In this month in which we celebrate the freedom of our independence as a nation, I think it is especially appropriate to reflect on just what freedom means and what it entails.
Pope John Paul II, Peter Marshall, Abraham Lincoln and others are often credited with quotes that go something like:
“Freedom is not the ability to do whatever we want but the ability to do what is right.”
That is, while we may be free to do a variety of things, the ability to choose to do the right thing in any situation is what freedom is ultimately all about – the freedom to be kind, to be faithful, to speak the truth, to join together in pursuing all that is noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, anything which is excellent or praiseworthy…
Have you ever wanted to be free? Truly free? This month’s edition of By the Door addresses that very issue. Will you join me, By the Door?
