The Hometown Science Festival took place on Saturday, August 12th on The Green. This event featured a variety of hands-on, educational activities for children and adults to learn more about science and how it is involved in our daily lives. The Hometown Science Series and Festival was created last winter by a group of 6 individuals from the Northern Appalachian Research Lab in Asaph and the Tioga County Conservation District as a way to communicate science to the general public in a fun, informative way.

A total of 25 local researchers, natural resource managers, teachers, health care providers, citizen scientists, and others provided activities and programs on a variety of topics. Some of these topics included: stream erosion, building dams, planting trees, learning about Monarch butterflies, identifying aquatic insects, building birdhouses, touching live eels, sorting freshwater mussels by species, learning about invasive and native plants and seeds, operating a solar telescope, building and launching stomp rockets, learning about the reptiles of Tioga County, participating in bird walks through Wellsboro, building solar-powered cars, dissecting barn owl pellets, and examining and identifying fossils.

The Hometown Science Festival is a part of the Hometown Science Series, which includes speakers, films, discussion panels, and other events in partnership with The Deane Center. These events will continue into the fall and winter, and focus primarily on local science happening in Northcentral Pennsylvania. The next event in the series is a film on August 25th about native plants and their pollinators. The film will be shown at the Coolidge Theater at the Deane Center at 6:00pm.
