Winter Outing Series – UPDATE

Not a lot of snow, BUT definitely ALOT of FUN!

by Tim Morey - January 11, 2019

Of course, as you well know, winter FEELS like it’s here now with the colder temperatures, but the snow and ice are still lacking.

Tomorrow’s XC Ski and Snowshoe Mini-clinic is being amended to a talk, due to lack of adequate snow cover. The talk will take place at 10am and cover equipment, being especially helpful if you are interested in purchasing skiing and snowshoeing equipment this winter. We’ll conclude by 10:30am and offer a limited amount of hot chocolate and coffee for those attending. That’s at Hills Creek, beach parking. See online: https://events.dcnr.pa.gov/event/xc_ski_and_snowshoe_mini-clinic

Project SNOWstorm does NOT require snow at all, since it’s taking place in the warm Wellsboro High School Auditorium at 2pm tomorrow, featuring author and birding expert, Scott Weidensaul. Scott will highlight Project SNOWstorm, tracking snowy owls since 2014 and has become one of the largest research projects of its kind in the world. This is free and open to all ages and interest levels. Audubon sponsored this speaker and you can learn more on their site: http://tiadaghtonaudubon.blogspot.com/

Winterfest at Hills Creek is NEXT Saturday January 19 10am-3pm. We may not have ice enough for group events. We may not even have snow, although will be ready if it comes, even that morning!!! However, we will offer a great FREE line-up of family programming with several old favorites and several newer programs and topics. Completely new this year will be a K9 search and rescue program, snowflake science and FREE bluebird boxes to make and take (limited quantities and 1 per family until their gone). Will we have snow? Either way, please join us and as always, there’s free hot dogs and hot chocolate starting at 11am until they’re gone! Bring your sled if it snows! Watch for more details at https://www.stepoutdoors.org/index.php/annual-events/winterfest next week.

Come out and watch the FULL LUNAR ECLIPSE Sunday January 20th at the PA Lumber Museum. Educational programs start at 9pm, with the eclipse starting a bit later, but becoming fully eclipsed by about 11:40pm. Night owls can stay longer, but the entire evening is a come and go as you please event. Experts will explain what is happening and have several telescopes to give you a closer look. Find out more about what causes eclipses, eclipses through history, myths and legends and even how to photograph the night sky. Snacks will be available at a nominal cost, including S’more kits and there will be a campfire available nearby earlier in the evening for roasting them. More details here including weather policy: http://lumbermuseum.org/lunar-eclipse-party-2019/ Let’s hope it’s a clear night!!!

Find the whole winter line-up at https://www.stepoutdoors.org/index.php/annual-events/winter-outings including a flyer you can print and post. If you would like some nice color posters for a business counter, let me know how many and the easiest way to get them to you.

Many more great events planned into March!!! Hope to see you out there and remember to Step Outdoors this winter!
