Shaffer named MU Women’s Soccer Head Coach

by Mansfield University - March 28, 2019

MANSFIELD, Pa. – Mansfield University has announced that it removed the interim tag from women’s soccer Head Coach John Shaffer.

He is just the second head coach of the Mountaineer program that was founded in 2002.

“I would like to thank the search committee for their time and consideration in this process,” said Shaffer. “I would also like to thank the administration, parents and most importantly players at Wellsboro Area School District for their support over my 12 years there.”

“I am humbled that I have been asked to lead the Mansfield women’s soccer program into the future,” Shaffer continued. “I believe that with hard work and a focus on positive relationships, something very special can be built here.”

Shaffer was named the interim head coach of the women’s soccer team prior to the start of the 2018 season. In his first season guiding the Mounties, Shaffer led Mansfield to its first program win since 2016, snapping a 31-game streak and building promise for the core of young players on the roster.

Before his appointment at Mansfield, Shaffer served as head coach of the boys’ soccer program at Wellsboro High School since 2010. Under his watch, Shaffer greatly enhanced the soccer program at Wellsboro and guided the Hornets to a District IV Championship and appearance in the Elite 8 of the PIAA State Tournament in 2017. He was named the NTL Coach of the Year following the 2013 season.

Shaffer received a Bachelor’s of Education from Kutztown University in 2007 and a Master’s of Education from Edinboro University in 2011. He holds certificates from the NSCAA/United Soccer Coaches and earned a U.S. Soccer E License.

“Becoming a Mountie is a dream,” Shaffer added. “I get to coach college soccer and keep my family in the area that we love.”

As for his immediate plans, “I look forward to reaching out to alumni and building a strong bond to connect the past, present and future members of the Mountie soccer program.”
