Pine Creek Rail Trail Extension Holds Groundbreaking Ceremony

by Sara Vogt - May 16, 2023

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Pine Creek Rail Trail Extension occurred on Friday, May 12th at 9:00 at the Patterson Trailhead Site at 37 Charleston St., in Wellsboro.

Debra Bigley, Planning Specialist M.Ed. for Tioga County, stepped into the Home Page studios to share the excellent news. She told us about this groundbreaking of the extension’s first section. It is essential because it is the first section to connect Wellsboro, PA, to Jersey Shore with the Pine Creek Rail Trail. This Southern section is a 1.2-mile connection, the first initial section of the trail. This portion of the trail will begin in Wellsboro at the old Patterson Lumber Company location site at 37 Charleston Street and eventually connect to the junction at 287. (Watch the video for detailed maps).

The project is split into two sections, with the first going from Patterson’s Trail head to Hilboldt Road. The second section will go from Hilboldt Road to the current Pine Creek Rail Trail at 287. The first section will be completed by May 2024, with the second section being completed the following year.

A combination of citizens, businesses, corporations, and state funders is funding this Pine Creek Rail Trail extension. It is 83% grant funded with the remaining funding coming from Act 13 funds through the county.

Those joining in with shovels to celebrate the beginning of the extension were Jim Weaver, Secretary of Transportation Michael Carrol, Skip Cavanaugh, State Representative Clint Owlett, Commissioner Eric Coolidge, DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn, Commissioners Mark Hamilton, and Roger Bunn, and former chief clerk of Tioga County Derek Williams.

Personal note: I love riding my bike on the Pine Creek Rail Trail and look forward to hopping in Wellsboro!
