On the Radar – Camp Cadet

Kids engage and learn from law enforcement for a week of camp

by John Vogt - June 28, 2017

Today’s On the Radar broadcast is a network feature spotlighting Camp Cadet. Hosted by PA State Trooper Angela Bieber, today’s broadcast provides an in-depth look at Camp Cadet and how it benefits 12 and 13-year-old students.

Each year, participating cadets are challenged by classroom instruction and physical activities. They are also taught self-discipline and how to work as team players. However, the primary focus of this program is not recreational. The camp is designed to provide participants with better understanding of law enforcement activities as they learn self-discipline, make new friends, and work as part of a team. The discipline-training fosters a positive attitude, which helps many graduating cadets attain goals they once thought to be unattainable.

The camp opens the door for young people to be involved with law enforcement officers on a more intimate level. The program reveals the inner workings of the police department and shows students the kinds of things that our officers face every day.

The attendance for Camp Cadet averages around eighty students each year. There are presentations made by different law enforcement agencies, such as the game commission, the district attorney’s office, the local judiciary, and more.

The students also have the opportunity to interact with an officer as their counselor throughout the week. This officer acts as a mentor and inspires them. He or she helps the students to understand that they can do many things that they are not accustomed to doing. “The word CAN’T is considered a swear word, and not permitted,” says Trooper Bieber.

Each student is encouraged to try everything and participate in all the activities that Camp Cadet has to offer.

During the second half of today’s broadcast, we have the opportunity to talk with participating students. We hope that you enjoy this special feature. The Home Page Network supports and endorses Camp Cadet and the positive ideals that this program fosters. Thank you to Trooper Angela Bieber and all law enforcement officers involved for making this program possible.
