Movin’ Together 2019: Weight, There’s More!
The tools in Movin’ Together help to strengthen us for the journey! The more fit we are, the better opportunity we have to fight off diseases like cancer. Our new saying, fending our immune system and fighting the disease is the reasoning behind each of our tools. And there are no tricks about being healthy – just tools!
Although we feel called In Movin’ Together to encourage women to be healthier, we want men and women to enjoy living a healthy life. In this broadcast, we included some of the men in our lives that we wanted to honor (watch the video).
In this broadcast, our tool is strength training or weight-bearing activities such as lifting weights. Strength-promoting exercise (SPE) has become an integral component of physical activity guidelines around the world, with the World Health Organization recommending at least 2 sessions per week.
Why is it so important for our daily routines of life to be in the best condition? Accidents! Slipping on wet pavement, falling down the stairs (or up) or sliding on ice happens in a moment. Statistics prove that if we are in good condition, our body will help us through those unplanned journeys of life because strength training increases our muscular, ligament, and tendon strength, and bone density. It also improves our balance and functional ability, especially in older adults.
Is losing weight one of your motivations for staying active? Add strength training in for better results!
In the broadcast video, we did our Movin’ Minute with Lauren and Julianna demonstrating the biceps press, tricep press, lunge, and plié. You may want to do the exercises along with them! While doing any weight lifting, we are encouraged to engage our core for a stronger frame.
Remember when using weights, do not grip your weights or hold your breath because both actions will raise your blood pressure.
