Mounties fall to Shippensburg
Mansfield was edged 3-2 before Shippensburg surged to a 22-7 win to take both ends of a PSAC East doubleheader on Saturday at Fairchild Field.
Luke Hils pitched a complete game in the opener with six hits allowed and just one earned run to go along with four strikeouts, but the Raiders took advantage of a late fielding error to score the winning run.
Shippensburg (17-16-1, 10-6 PSAC East) got on the board with a run in the bottom of the first, but a Tanner Klein single in the third scored Jerry Chavarria to tie the game. In the fourth, Chavarria drove a ball up the middle to bring home Colby Schearer and put Mansfield (16-20, 5-11 PSAC East) ahead 2-1.
The Raiders took advantage of a throwing error in the sixth to score two unearned runs to retake the lead.
Mark Curtis earned the win and Michael Hope got the save for Shippensburg.
Shippensburg opened the first inning of game two with four runs. The Mountaineers got one back in the second with Eric Harms scoring on a Dio Infante RBI.
The Raiders kept rolling with eight runs in the second and another in the third to jump out to a big lead.
Mansfield scored a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the seventh but could not match the Raiders’ offensive output.
Harms went 2-4 at the plate with three RBIs and a run scored to lead the Mounties.
Grant Hoover earned the win with Klein taking the loss.
Mansfield travels to Kutztown on Friday before hosting the Golden Bears on Saturday at Shaute Field.
