Midshipmen Too Much for Mounties

by Mansfield University - September 28, 2015

MANSFIELD – Navy’s Erick Wellmon rushed for 142 yards including a 65-yard touchdown and the Midshipmen capitalized on three Mansfield turnovers in a 51-0 CSFL win Saturday afternoon at Karl Van Norman Field.

After both teams failed to move the ball on their first series, Mansfield fumbled on their own 27 on a 3rd and 3 that was recovered by Navy.

The Mountaineer defense held firm, allowing Navy just five yards on three plays and forcing the Midshipmen to attempt a 38-yard field goal that missed its mark to the left.

Both teams traded downs until Navy’s Nick Deterding ran it in from eight yards out to cap off a 63-yard, nine play drive. Mansfield’s Dylan Flexer block the ensuing extra point attempt for a 6-0 lead.

On its next series, Navy got a huge break when Matthew Hite picked a deflected pass off his shoe tops and rumbled down the field for a 60-yard touchdown and a 13-0 lead as the first quarter ended.

Early in the second quarter Navy got another break when a Mansfield fumble was recovered by Navy at the Mountaineers 31 yard line. The MU defense held again forcing a 32-yard field goal by Brett Deters extending the lead to 16-0.

Mansfield fumbled on its next possession at midfield with the fumble being recovered and returned for a 53-yard touchdown by Temple Sloan ending the first half with 22-0 Navy lead.

Navy put the game out of reach on the first play of the second half when Wellmon scored on a 65-yard run.

Mansfield got a strong performance from punter Sean Green who averaged 41 yards on 10 punts on the afternoon. Freshman quarterback Austin O’Connell completed 7-of18 passes for 77 yards in his first collegiate start.

Joe Bucek and Kurt Logan each had four catches for 45 yards while freshman Aren Harris rushed for 59 yards.

Senior Spencer Underdown recorded a game-high 11 tackles including one for a loss with Jonathan Badman racking up seven stops and recovering a fumble. Jake Adcroft had five tackles and a sack while Brandon Pace had an interception.

Mansfield travels to CSFL newcomer Chestnut Hill on Sunday.
