The weather outside is frightful, but it can still be delightful is we act and play wisely! It can be easy to forget or ignore even common sense actions when we’re caught up in the busyness and stress of starting a new year. Today, Mayor Mike shares tips on how to stay safe and warm this time of year.

First, layer up! Keeping warm is much more effective when wearing multiple layers and not just a big, heavy coat alone. Mittens can also be more effective (than gloves) at keeping your hands warm.

“They’ll keep all your fingers together, all your digits happy,” remarks Mayor Mike.

Ice can be easy to miss this time of year. Mayor Mike recommends purchasing a pair of stabilizers to attach to your shoes from manufacturers such as Yaktrax. Wearing gloves or mittens is also important so you can keep your hands out of your pockets to help balance yourself.

It may seem ridiculous, but be sure to warm-up and stretch before shoveling snow. It can be heavier and harder to move than you think, especially if it’s iced over. Enjoy some hot tea before heading out to clear your sidewalk and touch your toes to limber up. Take your time, and if you have kids – get them involved! Turn a chore into a fun winter experience.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, about 1.2 million vehicle crashes occur every year due to inclement weather, resulting in about 6,000 fatalities and nearly half a million injuries. Stay alert on the road, stay in control and do everything progressively. Avoid slamming breaks or making sudden movements.

“Four-wheel-drive is not a license to drive like an idiot,” says Mayor Mike. “It should help you maintain your safety.”

It’s also a good idea to have your vehicle stocked up with some supplies in the event you get stuck. Some handy items to have packed away in your car include:
– blankets
– flashlights & batteries
– jumper cables
– snacks & drinks that won’t spoil

In the event that you are involved in an accident, be sure to turn on your four-way flashers, put out road flares or reflective devices.
