Mansfield History Is Thriving At The History Center And Museum of Us
The History Center on Main Street and the Museum of Us in Mansfield exist thanks to the devotion and perseverance of local historian, Joyce M. Tice. Joyce began chronicling genealogy in her family and then in the greater Mansfield area in 1992. Her extensive data base is available to anyone free of charge. She started a website in 1996 and created a museum in her barn in 2003. In 2011 Joyce purchased the Neal House on North Main Street and moved much of her barn museum there. As the Main Street museum grew, she moved to a larger building in the original Methodist Church on the corner of N. Main Street and Elmira Street in 2013. The museum operates completely by donation and membership fees. February 2022 marks a decade of history keeping at the History Center on Main Street.
Exhibits currently in the museum include a room dedicated to Mansfield High School, lovingly called the Blue and Gold Room. There is a display of a history of Mayors and Burgess’s of Mansfield, business history and cultural history exhibits are on display. One of the most popular exhibits has always been that of the 6400 students who graduated from Mansfield High School in its’ first one hundred years. “Any aspect of small-town living in Mansfield is collected and on display” stated Joyce.
Class reunions have enjoyed visiting the Museum Of Us. Classmates get a chance to visit with each other surrounded by displays that spark interesting conversations and lots of “remember when”s!
The History Center puts out a monthly newsletter and a members-only quarterly journal that has well researched articles looking into aspects of Mansfield that have never been researched before. For an abundance of interesting information, visit the web-site for the History Center at joycetice.com/histcent.htm. Joyce can also be reached at 570-250-9829.
