A week of Mansfield Home Page feature highlights (and bloopers)!

by Home Page Staff - August 12-13, 2017

It’s time once again to take a look at what happened the past week. The Weekly Highlights are a great way to catch up, but don’t forget that you can always watch the full stories from either our front page or the archives section.

Attendance high at 2017 Senior Expo
On Friday, August 4, 2017, Representative Matt Baker and his outstanding staff hosted the annual Senior Citizens Expo. Each year thousands of Seniors in the 68th district look forward to getting to together at this event to catch up with friends and learn about the latest information important to the Senior Citizens in our region.
The event featured more than 75 vendors from federal, state and county agencies, area businesses, and health organizations providing information and answering questions important to senior citizens. Lunch and light refreshments were also served.
Of Comics & Dual Coding
Most of us hope that we will do a job we love when we grow up. For Dr. Andrew Wales that has happened. A childhood passion for comics led him to Mansfield University to learn about art and teaching. Jump ahead and we find Dr. Wales as a self-published comic artist and a teacher of art at Athens High School. As a teacher, he acts as a role model and a guide for his art students. He advises students to be realistic about the challenges of making a living with comic art, while encouraging them to pursue their passion for art.

The comics created by Andrew Wales cover a wide variety of topics and of course some are educational. Through his comic books, you can learn about historical artists and decode challenging Shakespeare lines, among other things. Several of Dr. Wales published comic books are available at Pop’s Culture in Wellsboro.

Bank On It: Credit Reports
Your credit is as important to your financial well-being as your pulse rate is to your physical well-being. If you’re like most people, you probably don’t check up on your financial health as often as you visit your doctor’s office.

George Greeley, Senior Underwriter at Citizens & Northern Bank, shares his expertise and valuable tips to build and maintain a healthy credit score.
Fit For Life: Summer Fun For Kids
“Fit for Life” is a kid’s summer program that developed in 1997, through grant funding, with a mission to reach out to local kids under 18. This program, originally positioned in Wellsboro, Mansfield, and Westfield, operates as a collaborative effort between the Tioga County Partnership for Community Health and the Northern Tioga County School District Summer Feeding Program to provide kids a healthy lunch, and physical activity, with games, crafts, and educational workshops. It also teaches kids about nutrition, exposing them to healthy foods, like fruits and vegetables that may be foreign to them. Over the years, the program has evolved to serve in other locations, which are still current, Westfield, Elkland, and Knoxville.
