Mansfield Foundation: Helping students Reach for the Stars

Mansfield Foundation: Helping students Reach for the Stars

by Deb Bastian - April 12, 2022

A generous anonymous donor has made a pledge of $20,000 to be used as a matching gift for the Mansfield Way Scholarship. This is an unrestricted scholarship, and can be used to assist students who are in need of assistance. Their unmet needs may include tuition, housing or books. Mindy Engel, Executive Director for the Mansfield Foundation shared “Students circumstances can change and they may find they can’t cover the costs of their education. That’s where the Mansfield Foundation can help a student stay enrolled. Mansfield Foundation scholarships are a great example of the opportunities in this community.”

The Mansfield Foundation has been helping students attending college in the Northern Tier achieve their dream of a college education since 1974. A small group of individuals led by Marcella Hyde Smith organized the Foundation with the goal of growing $20,000 into $1million to provide financial assistance to college students. That goal has been far exceeded in its’ nearly 50 years, with managed assets of over $23 million.

The Foundation is often notified by the Financial Aid office at MU when they become aware of a student in need. All assistance is kept confidential between the student, the Foundation and the Financial Aid office. Mindy gave an example of a student who could not register for the next semester because they had a balance of $1,300. A student can only have a balance of $500 or less to be allowed to register. The Foundation was able to pay off the entire balance to make it possible for the student to register and return to school the next semester.

Now through April 30th all donations to the Mansfield Way Scholarship will be matched up to $20,000 by the anonymous donation. To make a donation, go to mansfieldfoundation.org. Your gift will be doubled and you will help make the dream of a college education a reality for deserving students.
