Live from the Hive – FFA Spotlight
In today’s episode of Live From The Hive, Wellsboro Area School District Superintendent, Dr. Brenda Freeman, delves into the high school’s agriscience program, speaking with teaching staff and students.
Wellsboro High School agriscience teacher, Mrs. Berndtson, explained that students in the program have a variety of classes to choose from in subject areas including animal sciences, natural resource management, plant sciences and leadership. These courses help prepare students for over 300 careers that are available in the agricultural industry, whether they choose post-secondary education or go directly into a career after high school.
The FFA (Future Farmers of America) chapter at Wellsboro’s high school is also thriving with about 50 active members who participate in a variety of events, activities and community service projects throughout the year. Many students achieve awards and recognition for their efforts through the Wellsboro chapter.
Each student in the agriscience program also has an SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience) that is completed outside of school time to help them utilize the skills and knowledge that they are learning in class and apply them to the real world. In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in an SAE Proficiency Award Program, which is a state-level achievement.
Throughout the summer months, many opportunities exist for FFA members, as well. Students can participate in state-level contests, broaden their experiences on field trips, and take part in the Tioga County Fair with animals that they breed, raise and show.
The real-life experiences students gain through their participation in these activities, coupled with the in-class learning, serve the students both in life in their future careers.
