Little League State Softball Tournament & Retirement Celebration

by Natalie Himmelberger - August 4, 2022

The Little League State Softball Tournament was held at the Little League Complex in Wellsboro last Friday, July 29. The 9-10-11 tournament welcomed the following teams to the complex: Lower Perkiomen Little League, Central Columbia Little League, and Mifflin County Little League.

The opening ceremony began with the National Anthem and the calling out of all the girls participating in the tournament as well as their coaches. The girls proudly held up their banners! During the opening ceremony, Art Rice, President and Tournament Director was honored for his 30 years of service. In addition, Head Umpire and Chief for District 15 was also honored as she too was retiring at the end of the season. From Towanda, Samantha Dessa. The two were given Wellsboro Little League jackets as well as resounding applause.

I spoke with Tanya Harmon, Vice President about the significance of the event. Harmon explained how well our own little league team had done this season. Little League is more than a game; it’s about community which Art Rice and Samantha Dessa have both helped build. Everyone involved with little league has grown to love and appreciate all that Art and Samantha have done for them. Tanya’s family was coached under Art’s tutelage and has worked alongside him for the last four years.

While this season has ended, families are encouraged to think about joining next season. Come for a game, stay for the community.
