Liberty Ends 14-Year Drought Vs Mansfield

by Ed Weaver - February 1, 2021

For the first time in 14 years the North Penn-Liberty Lady Mounties defeated rival North Penn-Mansfield on the basketball court.

After holding an 8-point, 29-21 lead through the first three quarters of play, the Lady Mounties outscored the Lady Tigers 17-1 over the final 8 minutes to score a 46-22 NTL crossover win.

Liberty jumped out to an early 17-9 first quarter lead behind 8 points from Kiersten Mitstifer and managed to keep that advantage until the fourth quarter. As the Lady Tigers tried to work their way back into the game, the fouls mounted up. The Lady Mounties hit just four shots from the field but went 8-of-9, including a perfect 4-for-4 from Eva Rice, at the foul line to pull away for the win.

Mitstifer led all scorers with 14 points, Jacelyn Nelson and Elizabeth Ritchie scored 8 points apiece, and Sidney Landis added 7. Rice finished with 6 despite not playing the majority of the game, Bridgette Russell chipped in two points, and Ryann Upham rounded out the scoring with a point.

Payton Chapel led North Penn-Mansfield with 11 points, Sarah Spohn had 4, Ashley Brubaker and Jolyn Farrell scored 2 points each, and Grace Farrer, Lizzie Kahl, and Shaniya Sparrow added 1 point each.

The win improves the Lady Mounties to 3-3 (3-3 NTL Small School Division) while the Lady Tigers fall to 2-4 (2-4 NTL Large School Division).
