Lechler homer lifts Hornets over CV

by Ed Weaver - May 2, 2019

A 3 RBI performance from junior Billy Lechler lifted the Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team to a 4-1 win on the road at Cowanesque Valley on Wednesday, May 1.

In the Hornets’ third at-bat of the day Lechler hit a two-run bomb to score himself and senior Cam Tennis putting Wellsboro up 2-0 early. Two batters later sophomore Kaeden Mann doubled then scored one at-bat later as senior Taynton Repard doubled to make it 3-0 after the 1st inning.

The score remained 3-0 in favor of Wellsboro until the top of the 4th. Tennis led off the inning then scored again as Lechler drove him home with a single to right field.

Cowanesque broke the shutout in the bottom of the 7th on a Christian Kemp double to left that scored Tucker Saint Peter.

Tennis led Wellsboro at the plate going 3-for-4, Lechler and Mann were 2-for-4 with Lechler hitting a home run and 3 RBIs and Mann hitting a double, and freshman Isaac Keane, freshman Darryn Callahan, and Repard added the other hits.

Junior Carson Davis pitched a complete game for the Hornets, allowing just the one run on 5 hits with 5 strikeouts.

St Peter, Devin Gatewood, Seth Huyler, Kemp, and Kade Sottolano had hits for the Indians. Kurtis Easton started on the mound and pitched 3 innings, allowing 8 hits and 3 runs (all earned) with 3 walks and a strikeout. Huyler pitched the remaining 4 innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits with 5 strikeouts.

The win improves the Hornets’ to 6-4 (6-3 NTL Large School Division) while the Indians fall to 4-11 (4-6 NTL Small School Division). Wellsboro hosts Jersey Shore later this afternoon before returning to league play as they host Troy on Friday, May 3.
