Jesus & Jiu-Jitsu

by Ella Propheta - August 29, 2023

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (which translate to “gentle art”) is a self-defense based martial art that focusses on taking an opponent to the ground, gaining a dominant position, and forcing them into a submission, such as chokeholds or joint locks.

At Jiu-Jitsu Youth Group, Isabella Yoder teaches teens how to safely practice the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). Her class consists of warm-up stretches and practicing mobility, learning simple yet effective BJJ moves, and ends with grappling. No matter your skill level, grappling is the best way to apply what you’ve learned in a safe, controlled session with an experienced partner, allowing you to maximize on your knowledge after just one class. Classes are catered to your experience level, and you don’t have to do anything you aren’t comfortable with.

After BJJ class, Isabella hosts an intimate Bible study around a table full of snacks, where contributing and/or asking questions is encouraged. Skipping the Bible study is completely acceptable if you aren’t interested in joining.

Teens in grades 7-12 are invited to Jiu-Jitsu Youth Group. The youth group is completely free, and is held on irregular Sundays at Contact Sports Club in Mansfield from 3pm to 5pm (first hour: Jiu-Jitsu class, second hour: Bible study, snacks, chatting). Teens are asked to wear athletic clothing and come 15 minutes early to be fitted with a kimono and belt.

If you’re interested in attending or if you have any questions, feel free to contact Isabella at Izzyyod06@gmail.com to find out when the next Jiu-Jitsu Youth Group will be.
