It’s Not All Child’s Play
The Safe Sitter course was developed in 1980 by Dr. Patricia A. Keener who realized that teens caring for children needed safety and rescue skills. The course stresses good safety habits for indoor, outdoor, online and personal safety, along with childcare skills and business skills. The course includes caring for children of all ages, maintaining routines, rules of behavior management, first aid, choking rescue, and CPR. Instructors use games, demonstration and role playing to reinforce the course material.
Over half a million people have graduated from the Safe Sitter program nationwide. UPMC Soldiers & Sailors is a registered teaching site, offering classes to teens grade six to eight. The $20 fee per person with a max of $40 per family covers the class and official Safe Sitter Student Handbook. Scholarships are available based on need. Seating is limited to 10 students.
The next class offered at UPMC Soldiers & Sailors will be held on January 25, 2020. To register call Jessica Birbeck at 570-723-0192.
