Ingerick hits 100, Lady Hornets top Athens

Senior Sarah Ingerick becomes third student to reach 100 hits

by Ed Weaver - May 4, 2016

Wellsboro senior Sarah Ingerick became the third Lady Hornet to reach 100 career hits in a 4-0 shutout against Athens on Tuesday, May 3.

“It feels good,” Ingerick said of the milestone. “It was sort of weird there the last couple of days where people were telling me ‘congrats’ but I sort of don’t officially have it yet but it feels good. I feel like I can just go in there and hit and not have to worry about anything now.”

Coming in with 99 career hits, and picking up the 100th hit in a rained out game against Coudersport last Friday, Ingerick made it official in the bottom of the first inning Friday. Ingerick now joins alumni Kate Reese and Hilarie Powers as the only three softball players to accomplish the feat.

“Sarah is a tremendous athlete with the will to compete and will succeed at whatever she does,” commented head coach Greg Carr.

After senior Jenny Young and sophomore Sydney Tremper (double) reached base, Ingerick drove both of them home on a single to make it 2-0 Wellsboro. Ingerick later scored as senior Alexa Singer singled to bring her home to make it 3-0.

The Lady Hornets held their 3-0 the rest of the way until the sixth inning. Athens threatened in the top of the fifth, buy Young and sophomore Kailee Clymer doubled up the runner at 2nd base to end the inning. Senior Darci Warriner scored in the sixth to make it 4-0 Wellsboro.

“The girls were up for this game, knowing what was on the line,” Carr continued. “We had a couple of really good batting practices. What I like about this team they keep every game in perspective and that every game means as much as the game before. We do a good job of not getting ahead of our selfs and keeping every opponent as a equal.”

Ingerick and Singer both went 2-for-3 at the plate with 2 RBI’s to lead the Lady Hornets. Young was 1-for-2 with a run scored, Tremper was 1-for-3 with a double and run scored, Warriner was 1-for-2 with a run scored, and sophomore Brianne Keane was 1-for-3.

Sophomore Alyssa Yungwirth continued her dominance on the mound as she pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout with 2 walks, and 12 strikeouts on 97 pitches to improve to 5-2 on the year. Yungwirth now has 72 strikeouts on the year and 129 for her career.

The win improves the Lady Hornets’ record to 10-2 on the year. The team will be back in action this afternoon in Troy.
