Hornets no match for Athens on Senior Night

by Ed Weaver - February 3, 2016

The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team had a six-game win streak snapped as Athens won 63-47 on Tuesday, February 2 during Senior Night.

The Wildcats scored five quick points right out of the gate and had Wellsboro down 10 early before sophomores Dalton Prough and Collin Pietropola combined for 10 of the Hornets’ 13 first quarter points.

The Hornets trailed 15-13 as the second quarter started, but that’s when Athens started to pull away. Athens held the Hornets to just four points in the quarter before Pietropola’s three found the bottom of the net before the quarter ended, bringing the halftime score to 32-20 in favor of the Wildcats.

Wellsboro struggled to score as the second half started and were outscored 13-6 by Athens to start the fourth quarter trailing 45-26. The Hornets scored 21 points in the fourth quarter, but were to make a full comeback.

Dalton Prough led the team with 13 points, Pietropola finished with 10, and junior Jacob Singer had nine. Senior Dawson Prough finished with eight in his final regular season home game, sophomore Quinn Henry had four, and junior Brandon Lamphier pitched in three.

Henry had four assists to give him 65 on the year and Dalton Prough grabbed five rebounds for his 104th of the season.

The JV team kept their perfect season going with a 54-24 win behind 12 points from freshman Andrew Brelo and 11 from freshman Brandyn Tuttle.

The loss drops the Hornets’ record to 13-7 and clinches the NTL Division 1 title for Athens. The Hornets will be back on the court Thursday, February 4 as they host rival North Penn-Mansfield.
