On Tuesday, May 14th the Wellsboro Hornets baseball team hosted the Northeast Bradford Panthers on senior night. Before the game began, Wellsboro athletic director Matt Rendos presented Caden Smith in recognition of his athletic and academic careers.

Bottom of the first, Wellsboro got on the board first as Caden Smith scored off a Gabe Sprouse RBI. Northeast Bradford tied it up in the top of the next inning, Clay Wiggins scored on a single from Connor Johnson.

But Wellsboro fired back, brining in four runs at the bottom of the inning, getting them out ahead. Bases loaded, Alec Magli is forced home on a walk. Then Lucas Cuneo steals home base. Then Sprouse hits a double for two runs, bringing home Smith and Cameron Owlett, making the score 5-1.

Bottom of the third, Wellsboro scored again as Marek Mascho brings home Magli.

Top of the fourth, the Panthers Connor Johnson scores off an error, making it 6-2 Wellsboro.

Bottom of the fifth, Max Mascho scores off an RBI from Smith.

But Northeast Bradford shifts the momentum with a big double play to close the inning. The Hornet’s Marek Mascho at bat, slams one to left field, the Panther’s Andrew Beers gets under it, and flings a perfect ball to home plate for the tag from Kohen Hugo.

Top of the sixth, the Panther’s Clay Wiggins and Johnson cross home plate off of a double by Ethan Hunsinger. Then, Eli Stanton hits a single, but Wellsboro doesn’t make the connection, bringing home Beers and Hunsinger. At the end of the inning, the score was 7-6, Wellsboro.

The Panthers tied it up at the top of the seventh. With a full count, Wiggins hits a single – bringing in Hugo to make the score 7-7.

And finally to end the game at the bottom of the seventh, Wellsboro capitalized on a low pitch as Cuneo steals home for the win. Final score, 8-7 Hornets.

The Hornets will be back on the field on Thursday as they travel to Towanda.
