North Penn-Mansfield, North Penn-Liberty, and Wellsboro were all in action in District IV Class AAA baseball and softball playoffs on Tuesday, May 23.
Danville 8, North Penn-Mansfield 3
A year after winning Districts in Class AA, the Tigers’ season came to an end Tuesday. Danville scored a run each in the second and third innings to take an early 2-0 lead, but Mansfield cut it to 2-1 in the bottom of the third. With JP Shaw at bat, Kipp Hillson was thrown out trying to steal second and in the process, Dylan Wesneski stole home to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Ironmen added three more runs in the top of the fifth to lead 5-1, but again the Tigers closed to within two runs. Wesneski reached base, Hillson scored him in the next at bat, then scored as Brendan Hill grounded into a fielder’s choice leaving the Tigers trailing 5-3.
Mansfield couldn’t dig themselves out of that hole as Danville added three more runs over the final two innings.
Hillson had two hits and scored a run, Shaw had 2 hits, and Joel Whitteker added a hit. Wesneski scored two runs for the Tigers.
North Penn-Mansfield ends their season at 15-5 (12-3 NTL Large School Division).
North Penn-Liberty 14, Loyalsock 9
A seven-run fourth inning powered the Lady Mounties past the Lancers.
Liberty trailed 2-0 after the top of the first, but a Savanah Doney double scored Brooke Harvey to cut the score to 2-1. Liberty scored three runs in the second, but put the game away in the fourth. Carmen Bates sent a shot to the outfield to score Emily Strange, Jillian Berguson, and Mariah Kshir to start the fourth. Later, Bates, Harvey, Doney, and Mackenzie Heater scored.
Loyalsock battled back to cut the score to 13-9, but the Lady Mounties added their final run in the bottom of the sixth on a Kshir sac fly to center to score Strange to advance the Lady Mounties into second round of playoffs for just the second time in program history.
Doney was 4-for-4 with three doubles, Harvey had three hits, and Bates, Heater, and Abby Heatley added hits. Doney also picked up the win on the mound.
Wellsboro 4, Bloomsburg 0
The Lady Hornets advanced to the District IV semi-finals as they shutout Bloomsburg.
Cathryn Brought singled up the middle to score Alyssa Yungwirth to make it 1-0 in the bottom of the first. The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth.
Ryann Adams hit a ball to short and beat out a throw to put a runner on for Yungwirth. Yungwirth hit a two-run home run in the next at bat to put Wellsboro up 3-0 before the Lady Hornets closed out the game with a run from Hailey Neal in the sixth for the win.
Yungwirth was 2-for-4 with a home run and 2 RBI’s and Brought was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Kailee Clymer, Neal, Adams, Heidi Zuchowski, and Brianne Keane added the rest of the Lady Hornets’ nine hits.
Yungwirth pitched a complete game for her 16th win of the season and 36th of her career. Yungwirth scattered 4 hits in 7 innings, had one walk, and struck out 14.
Wellsboro and Liberty square off in the semi-final round of the District IV Class AAA playoffs on Thursday, May 25 at the Mosser Complex in Turbotville.
