Higgins Returns, STPR 2019 Launches!

by Home Page Staff - September 13, 2019

It’s STPR weekend once again! The Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally kicked off with the Parc Exposé on The Green in Wellsboro on Thursday night. The event continues until Saturday, September 14 when it will conclude with a winners podium celebration.

STPR is an annual racing competition, sanctioned by American Rally Association, that draws thousands into Tioga County from all over the world. Locals and visitors alike participate and spectate this high-speed event.

2019 sees the return of defending champion, David Higgins & co-driver, Craig Drew.

Some of the challenges he, and the 74 other entrants, will face are a number of stage changes and possible adverse weather conditions.

“This year STPR is going to be a bit different,” said Higgins, after completing recce and shakedown on Thursday. “We’re a few months later on, so the roads were definitely different when we did some of the slow speed practice. But the familiar rain has come back now, so it’s gone back to some more familiar territory. It’s always a favorite of mine, this rally. It’s probably the hardest rally we do, so, it’s a big challenge. But the car felt great today and we’ve done our homework on the road, so we’re in hopefully good shape.”

STPR begins in the forest today at Lebo 1 for Stage 1. Spectators can find more information and directions to viewing areas at STPR.org, including a new, massive spectator area on Waste Management property – which replaces the special stages previously shown at the Whitneyville Fairgrounds.

Tioga County residents can also come meet and cheer for our local teams at the Parc Exposé on Saturday morning on The Green! This year’s local entries include:

– Derek James (James World Rally Team) Westfield, PA
– Kent & Brianna Thompson (KB Racing) Wellsboro, PA
– Matthew James (Brennan Motorsports) Mansfield, PA
– Jeffrey Carl & Austin Hendrickson (Twisted Nutz Racing) Wellsboro, PA
– Jeremy Keck (Reaper Motorsports) Wellsboro, PA
– Charlie Tamaris & Cody Marvin (Twisted Nutz Racing) Wellsboro, PA
– Antonio Esposito (Vesuvio Rally Team) Wellsboro, PA
