Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!

by Natalie Himmelberger - January 16, 2023

Today is Martin Luther King Junior Day. Dr. King was born on Jan. 15, 1929. An American Baptist minister, he was a nonviolent activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the Civil Rights Movement. He protested and spoke against segregation, struggling to gain equal rights for all.

Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4,1968 which led to an outpouring of anger as well as a period of national mourning. The call for a federal holiday to honor Dr. King’s legacy began soon after his assassination. First celebrated in 1986, the day marks an observance of Dr. King’s life and achievements.

Today, six choral groups, their accompanists and audience members will join in celebrating at the Wellsboro Area High School Auditorium at 7pm. Ashley Wilson, founder, director and CEO of Rewritten of Tioga County, a nonprofit organization, is an advocate for justice and has dedicated her life’s work to helping others rise above difficult circumstances, will be sharing her personal story.

The event is free and open to the public, with donations being accepted at the door. Come join this choral celebration of the life and mission of Martin Luther King Jr.
